Walk with us in the word as Bishop Anthony L Jinwright shares a Roadmap to Your Next.
Romans 4:18-24 (NIV)
18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead —since he was about a hundred years old — and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.
20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,
21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”
23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone,
24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness — for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.
In the text, Abraham demonstrates his faith in God's promise to have many descendants, even when there was no reason to hope. Abraham's faith was based on God's word and promise, not his own ability.
Believing like Abraham is significant because he is often referred to as the father of faith. In Romans 4:3, it states, "For what does the Scripture say? 'Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.'" Abraham's faith was characterized by trust and obedience to God's promises, even when they seemed impossible.
God made a covenant with Abraham, promising him numerous descendants and the land of Canaan (Genesis 12:1-3). Despite challenges and delays, Abraham remained steadfast in his faith. This teaches us that faith requires trust in God's timing and His plans, even when we do not understand them fully.
Additionally, in Galatians 3:6-9, it emphasizes that those who have faith are children of Abraham. This means that by believing in God and His promises, we are part of the same spiritual lineage. Abraham’s faith exemplifies the relationship we are called to have with God— one of trust, obedience, and a willingness to step into the unknown.
In our own lives, believing like Abraham encourages us to rely on God’s promises, to act in faith, and to remain hopeful even when circumstances seem daunting. It reminds us that faith is not just a belief, but an active response to God's word.
